What would people say if I told them that I met a footless boy who plays football? (Of course, since I’m talking about Brazil, football is really soccer.) I don’t think even my family or closest friends would believe me. Luckily, I’m a photographer and can show them. The beautiful part of this story is not just that Gabriel plays football without feet, but that he plays incredibly well.
O que as pessoas falam quando que eu digo a elas que conheci um menino que joga futebol sem os pés? (É claro, que eu estou falando sobre o Brasil, o football (bola nos pés) é realmente futebol.) Eu não acho que mesmo a minha família ou amigos mais próximos acreditaria em mim. Felizmente, eu sou um fotógrafo e posso mostrar-lhes. A parte bonita da história não é apenas que Gabriel joga futebol sem os pés, mas que ele joga incrivelmente bem.
Gabriel became famous after he was featured on a TV sports program. Those scenes of him demonstrating great skill with the ball hadn’t left my mind, so I was excited about the opportunity to photograph him. But while on the road to Campos do Goytacazes, where Gabriel lives, I kept thinking that maybe the TV show had been overproduced and that he couldn’t really be THAT good.
Gabriel ficou famoso depois que ele foi apresentado em um programa de esportes da TV. As cenas dele demonstrando grande habilidade com a bola, não sairam da minha cabeça, eu estava animado com a oportunidade de fotografá-lo. Quando passava na estrada para Campos do Goytacazes, onde vive Gabriel, fiquei pensando que o programa de TV tenha sido superproduzido e que não deveria ser um programa realmente bom.
Gabriel Muniz, an 11-year-old boy born with malformed feet, grew up like most Brazilian children with a soccer ball by his side.
Gabriel Muniz, um menino de 11 anos de idade, nasceu com os pés deformados, cresceu como a maioria das crianças brasileiras com uma bola de futebol ao seu lado.
We reached the city a day ahead of schedule and passed by Gabriel’s school where we spotted him playing soccer with friends. From there we went to his home where his mother agreed to see us even though we were a day early. Gabriel eventually arrived home after school and greeted us shyly, but by the time he did his homework, played video games, and had a snack, it was too late for him to play soccer for us.
Nós chegamos na cidade um dia antes do previsto e passamos pela escola de Gabriel, onde o vimos jogar futebol com os amigos. De lá, fomos para sua casa, onde sua mãe concordou em nos receber, ainda que fosse um dia antes do combinado. Gabriel finalmente chegou em casa depois da escola e nos cumprimentou timidamente, depois de um tempo ele fez o seu dever de casa, brincou de vídeo game, e tomou um lanche, quando percebemos, já era tarde demais para ele jogar futebol para que nós pudessemos vê-lo.
The next day we returned before he awoke, and followed his first steps of the day. His mother gave him prostheses to wear, which surprised us, but she said he should go to school with them on.
No dia seguinte, voltamos antes que ele acordasse, e seguimos os primeiros passos do seu dia. Sua mãe deu-lhe próteses para usar nos pés, o que nos surpreendeu, mas ela disse que ele deveria ir para a escola com eles.
At school we noticed he was very popular, but we were also surprised to learn that a teacher had suspended him from school for two days for failing to hand in his homework.
Na escola, percebemos que ele era muito popular, mas também fomos surpreendidos ao saber que um professor o havia suspendido da escola por dois dias por deixar de lado a sua lição de casa.
He showed up in spite of that because the principal had a talk with his teacher, and he was allowed to come in for part of the day.
Ele compareceu, apesar dos pesares, porque um dos cabeças teve uma conversa com seu professor, e ele foi autorizado a entrar por uma parte do dia na aula.
Contrary to the suspension, the principal presented Gabriel with a new pair of socks, which he normally wears as shoes when he’s not using the prostheses. She told us that Gabriel is a good student, with the only problem being how to get him off the soccer field and into the classroom. “He wants to play soccer all the time,” she said.
Ao contrário da suspensão, a diretora da escola presenteou Gabriel com um novo par de meias, as quais ele normalmente usa como sapatos quando não está usando a prótese. Ela nos disse que Gabriel é um bom aluno, com um único problema que seria, como fazê-lo ficar fora do campo de futebol durante as aulas. "Ele quer jogar futebol o tempo todo", disse ela. 
Then came the magical moment of our visit. Gabriel left the classroom and went onto the field to join a soccer match. He was amazing. He was fast, showed excellent game foresight, passed well and dribbled skillfully. The only real difficulties came from playing with older, bigger kids, but his skill was obvious. It also became obvious that his fellow players treated him as an equal, with no mercy.
Então veio o momento mágico da nossa visita. Gabriel deixou a sala de aula e foi para o campo para participar de uma partida de futebol. Ele foi incrível. Ele foi rápido, mostrou visão de jogo excelente, passou bem e driblou habilmente. As únicas dificuldades reais foi jogar com os mais velhos, as crianças são maiores, e demonstram maior habilidade e isso era óbvio. Ele também tornou óbvio a seus colegas jogadores que quer que o tratem por igual, sem misericórdia. 
Gabriel gosta de jogar como zagueiro e meio atacante, e à esquerda. Ele foi o artilheiro em torneios que disputou com a equipe da escola. Ele aspira, como muitos meninos, em encontrar-se com seu ídolo do futebol da Argentina, Lionel Messi, e jogar ao lado dele para o Barcelona FC.
Recently Gabriel was invited to train at a football school that Barcelona FC has in Saquarema, west of Rio. His school coach told us that he’s been invited to visit the club’s headquarters in Spain, but his mother didn’t want to talk openly of the matter to avoiding spoiling his chances.
Recentemente Gabriel foi convidado para treinar em uma escola de futebol que o Barcelona FC tem em Saquarema, a oeste do Rio de Janeiro. Seu treinador escolar nos disse que ele foi convidado a visitar a sede do clube na Espanha, mas sua mãe não quis falar abertamente sobre o assunto para evitar estragar suas chances.
In spite of all his talent, I don’t know what opportunities await Gabriel. I do know that it would be incredible to see him in action in the greater world of football, in spite of the obvious difficulties. Unfortunately there isn’t a Paralympic category for players with malformed limbs, only for the visually impaired. But if there were, Gabriel would be a candidate for the Olympic gold that Brazilian football has yet to conquest.
Apesar de todo o seu talento, eu não sei que oportunidades esperam por Gabriel. Eu sei que seria incrível vê-lo em ação, apesar das dificuldades óbvias, entre os maiores do mundo do futebol. Infelizmente não há uma categoria Paraolímpica para os jogadores com membros mal formados, apenas para os deficientes visuais. Mas se houvesse, Gabriel seria um candidato para o ouro olímpico que o futebol brasileiro ainda tem a conquistar.
In Brazil, when we see a talented new player, we say that “he has the ball.” Gabriel loves football, and although he doesn’t have the foot, he certainly “has the ball.”
No Brasil, quando vemos um jogador novo e com talento, podemos dizer que "ele tem a bola." Gabriel adora futebol, e embora ele não tenha os pés, ele certamente "tem a bola."In spite of all his talent, I don’t know what opportunities await Gabriel. Ricardo Moraes
Born to a family of photographers, Ricardo began to work at the age of 14 as a studio assistant. His interest for photojournalism began in 2003, when he began to accompany photographers at work in the streets. He became an apprentice at the O Dia newspaper in 2004. Today at the age of 26, after having spent six of those years working at major newspapers and agencies, he’s a full-time stringer for Reuters, based in Brasilia. He won POYi’s spot news category in 2009.
Nascido em uma família de fotógrafos, Ricardo começou a trabalhar com 14 como assistente de estúdio. Seu interesse pelo fotojornalismo começou em 2003, quando começou a acompanhar fotógrafos no trabalho nas ruas. Ele se tornou aprendiz no jornal O Dia em 2004. Hoje, com 26 anos, depois de ter passado seis desses anos de trabalho em grandes jornais e agências, ele trabalha em tempo integral para a Reuters, com sede em Brasília. Ele ganhou POYi categoria de notícias local, em 2009.
